rebuilding my 450 steering clutches and brake (pictures)
I am rebuilding my steering clutches and brakes.
the thread started by Crawler123 was printed and used!!
a well done thread, lots of information, and he even answered a question or 5 for me in PM, many thanks and hats off to him.
It took me about 8 hours to pull the machine down and remove the steering clutch assemblies. left steering would always stick and grab, not disengage smoothly, it is the rusty side. the right was full of oil, it caused my decision to pull it down and repair, the brake started grabbing and binding in reverse.
I think I have an O-ring around the quill leaking.
I am going to try and post as many pictures as I can without causing a problem or getting into trouble! LOL

pictures
lifting off the ROPS
seat and tank removed
brake top plates exposed, always an oil leak over the right side, no evidence it was allowing oil into the steering cavity
glad I still have my old pneumatic pump

450 steering disassembly
right side oil
looking all the way thru the spool
right side, lower quill, where I suspect my oil leak is, around the O-ring

I need some thoughts
I suspect my oil leak into the right side to be from the oring around the quill. I see the "crust" around the bottom in the picture, I suspect that is where it is leaking.
Has anyone been in this area? what do I watch out for?
I am also going to rebuild my power steering boosters, I suspect both are leaking.
I know my tracks are worn out, but I also have a couple of rollers that I plan on replacing before I put the worn out tracks back on, yep, money dictates that decision.

new parts arrived
I got my parts in, the Oring for the quill, I will photograph the quill removal.
also update a few other things, and hopefully reassembly starts this weekend.

just make sure you have the right hub and brake drum
my crawler is a 450, plain 450, it uses a different hub and brake drum.
also uses different steel disc.
The T20717 steel separator plates are often confused with the T31732 plates used in the later steering clutches. To be sure which plates you have in your clutch the thickness should be measured. The T20717 will measure closer to .087 while the later discs will be closer to .097-.099. If the quantity of your discs varies from what is normally required, it is usually caused by the mis-use of the wrong steel separator plates. The JD 450B used the thicker plates.
I did have the thicker plates in my crawler................
my brake drum P/N
my hub p/n
my old steel plate
new steel plate t20717
my brake drum loaded with the old fibers and the old steels
after I "dry ice blast" my drums and hubs I will load them with the new stuff and show them.

more bad news in my diff, had both bearings on my spool bad.
started to replace leaking o-ring and found bad bearings in my diff
found this in the bottom of the diff housing.
this is the bearing from the spool showing the P/N
diff seal

few more seals and bearings p/n
quill assembly new national number for seal 450433 is 471138
I damaged the shims when I pulled the caps over the shaft, be careful.
this is the seal inside the clutch area, between final and clutch
new national number for seals,
413003 is now 415458
had a hard time removing the race from the quill, welded a bead on it
then it almost fell out, just a little guide tapping.
new dics stacked in the clutch pack, shorter than MY original.
now it has the correct thickness steels for a plain 450

Are those metallic disc's? as for the height take the pack back out and take a good old steel and put it in first and reload the pack and see if the height is about what it was.....The weld trick works great been using it for years when it cools the cup shrinks and as you said will almost fall out
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
my pack was full of the wrong steels, they were too thick according to the parts manual. the plain 450 uses steel T20717 .089,jtrichard wrote:Are those metallic disc's? as for the height take the pack back out and take a good old steel and put it in first and reload the pack and see if the height is about what it was.....The weld trick works great been using it for years when it cools the cup shrinks and as you said will almost fall out
and the 450B uses steel T31730, which is .099
when I opened my clutch pack up, there was a fiber thickness above the brake drum, too thick, it was hard to get the right side to release.
I am looking for a JD264 gauge, or someone that knows that distance
between the "legs" on the side and the center point of the gauge.
then I can confirm my pressure plate is all even.

OH I miss-under stood that it had the wrong ones in at first (reread post and now see where you said that) looking good so far ...ring gear case is always nice place to find extra things a friend found a 20" pair of Channel locks in the case of a D8 cat
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
ohhhhh wow....... 20" channel locks!
I think I just got a tracing of the JD264 gauge.
I will look to make sure it is right and then try to figure out if it is ok to post a sketch of it. it is used to setup the steering clutch as well as the engine clutch pressure plates.
I can not tell you how much this site helped me in getting my dozer done.
I gotta hurry and get it back in use, trying to finish my lake project.
