crankshaft flange ?
I have a 1970 JD350 loader with reverser, the engine locked up shoertly after I bought it, so I bought a reman engine, as I was about to swich the back plate, because it looked different, I noticed that the crankshaft rear flange on my old one had a 1/4 inch ring or wear mark, and that it was different than the new reman one..the new reman one is just round, no grooves. I measured both and they both measure the same?? can someone help me out here, [/img]

crankshaft?
Well, okay, let me put it into a question. Does anyone know whether this difference will affect anything? I would like to get my loader back together soon. And yes I have the manuals, in fact I have every manual for the loader and none mention a difference in cranks.

crankshaft?
Okay, called the company that sold me the engine, so here is the answer that no one seemed to be able to answer, lol...The grooves are not suppose to be there, even though they looked like they are machined that way. The rear main seal apparently causes this groove in machines this age. When they reman an engine that has this type of wear, they put a 1/4 inch sleeve on the flange to fill in.
Thanks everyone next time I will ask a question that someone can answer. lol

Hi,
Ah. Good. That was what I was thinking, but did not *know*. So, I was letting someone else answer you. I follow the board a few times a day, but many only check every few days or so.

Okay, I haven't posted here in a very long time but I feel like I needed to comment here.
What you are looking at is a removable wear ring that is installed onto the crankshaft so that the Rear main seal doesn't cut that groove directly into the shaft itself. When you purchased an old style seal it would come with a new wear ring. You simply cut the old ring off and installed the new one giving you a brand new wear surface. Sounds simple enough but reinstalling those new rings could be difficult at times. Deere has long sense gotten rid of that system and now you get a all in one seal and ring set combined into one piece. You then need a special rear main seal installation tool to install this new style seal as an all in one piece. Without the tool you can forget it.
Your new or re-man engine has no "Old Style" ring installed. It looks to me as if it was intended to have the new style seal installed. I hope you either installed the new style seal or had an old style with a new ring to go onto your crank shaft. I don't mean to muddy your waters but I felt I needed to say something.
Other than that your machine looks awesome and you did a great job on the restore. Hope this clears this up a bit and I'm sorry you didn't get an answer to this question a while back.
