Voltage Regulator

Post by 77 Ford » Mon Jul 06, 2015 6:53 am

I think my Motorola voltage regulator has died. I have read several articles about converting to a 1 wire alt but what about just using a run of the mill voltage regulator?

I think the motorola one is about 150 bucks and a car one is less than 20 bucks. They have the same hook up field, stator, etc....

Any thoughts?

I would have to assume that the regulator is specific to the alternator it is running, so I tend to doubt that the "car" one would work, but who knows.

Hi,

A regulator has to be designed to match the impedance of the alternator field coil. If not, then it can easily not produce enough power, or, worse, produce too much. Go too far in the too much direction and everything burns out.

So, you can try the low cost option, and pay attention to the voltage produced with a meter and also how hot the regulator and alternator become. If the voltage is ok, and things don't overheat, you should be ok. If it starts going wrong, then the backup plan would be to buy the proper regulator.

I converted mine to a Delco 3 wire setup. The Deere alternator was fine, as in your case the regulator was bad and it cooked the battery. Got the alternator from autozone.

I just had the voltage regulator replaced on my john deere 350 crawler/loader replaced. The new regulator is a Prestolite model #105-146. It is exactly like the original and cost to me was $39.00.

I ended up doing the alternator conversion I bought a 1 wire and it works great. I fixed the amp gauge so now I'll know if i'm not charging again. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Where is the voltage regulator located on a 1969 JD 350 dozer, I have looked all over and cant find what I see in pictures for the R2J1 voltage regulator, it has 4 wires according to replacement parts pictures. What I find that might be it has 6 wires. Could I possibly need a RS2J1 voltage regulator ?
