350 B steering
350 B steering
I was pushing some brush yesterday and lost steering and brake on right track all of a sudden. How should I start troubleshooting the problem to see what has happened. Everything has been working good and did not make any noises it just quit working. Thanks

Re: 350 B steering
Are you sure the clutch isn't working? Problem may be in the brake only. I'd start by removing the inspection/adjustment cover under the seat. Operate the turning lever to see what's going on in there. The brake adjustment screw may have worked out or broken off.

Re: 350 B steering
Hi,
There is always the old 'put the blade against a big tree' clutch test. If the tracks spin, clutches are driving. Pull back on the levers, and if the tracks stop spinning, the clutches are releasing. Then you will know if you have both clutch and brake issues, or just brake.

Thanks for the advice, I will try that out when the weather clears up. Should it still steer if the brake failed.

Hi,
When against the tree, the track should still drive and spin. When you pull the lever, the track will stop without any brake function.
When not against the tree, it will drift some when you pull the lever but not do a proper turn without brake function. But, you already know that. So now you need to see if you have more wrong than the brake.

Re: 350 B steering
I would pull top cover and look in there,, another common ailment is the connecting joint with two spring loaded heim joints breaks ,, or one one of the balls wears and slips out of the joint.. I believe Lavoy was making a run of these to factory specs awhile ago,, not sure how that project ended up but if that is the problem I would contact Lavoy.. best regards Mark.

Re: 350 B steering
Well I finally got around to doing the tree test. Both tracks turned and stopped when pulling back levers and started spinning when released. When driving foward it will drift very little when lever is pulled. Took off inspection cover and the brake adjustment bolt was pretty loose. Tightened it up and backed it off some but still didn't operate correctly. Doing the same thing still. Has anyone made a video of replacing the brakes through access hole. Any advice on what to check now. Thanks for all the help.

When checking for drift, if you do it moving up a hill. Also, don't mistake the right brake not working with the left side clutch slipping.

Re: 350 B steering
Left side works properly. Right side the track turns while pushing on a big tree and when lever is pulled half way the track stops and starts turning again when lever is released. It will not steer on the right side at all, I have to use left track to make it turn. Got it out of the woods so I can check it out better and have tools close by also.

sounds like you need to adjust every thing your brake is not working

Well I finally got around to checking out what the problem is. First I pulled top covers off and compared the left to the right. Noticed the brake band was not right against drum. Really couldn't see what was wrong with it so I pulled the tank to get a better view. Looking from the back side you could see the brake band broke in half. No idea what caused that to happen. I have read a couple posts that said they could be replaced through acess panel. Just wandering what the process is doing it this way. Does all the linkage have to come out, will the brake flex that much? Just a couple of my questions for now.
Re: 350 B steering
Brake band on 350 can not be replaced from the top, final drive must be removed.
