Sorry I didn't specify. The safety block is for a 40- 4 roller.

track saftey block
OK you guys got me now---I have 2 JD 420s in my yard--1 JD 40,4 roller--1 JD 40, 3 roller, have worked on crawlers for years, but i must have missed or overlooked something, What is a track safety block & shims, never heard the term before, other than a wood block placed at the tracks to keep from rolling on it/s own? Thank You in advance, Don

I may have mispoken whin i called them TRACK safety blocks. The parts catalog just calls them safety blocks, part# 19 & 20, page 65-2. They bolt to the rear cross bar allowing the sprocket to contact them which is suppose to stop the tractor in case the tracks become clogged. They apparently work, bothof mine are completely shot.

Hi,
Yep. My 420c, which has lots and lots of well-maintained hours on her, has never had either sprocket come up against the safety block. Of course, she's never had the bearings run out of her, either!

I don/t have a parts book, just couldn/t understand what a track saftey block was, now i know thanks to you guys on this forum. I have always thought these saftey blocks were a gaurd to keep the sprocket from pushing stones and debris against the rear roller. I have seen these blocks wornout, always an indication of bad finaldrive bearings and or a loose trackframe, or loose rock shafts. I have never seen any shims for these blocks on any machines i have or have worked on.
Thanks Much for the information, Don
