It's always something!
Got the 1010 CLB jacked up enough to block it so we could get under it. Took some doing but we got the belly pans off without getting squashed. Shoveled probably 6-8" of oil soaked dirt out of the rear pan and scraped off the hydraulic lines under the rig. Found that one steel line had simply rusted through over the past 5 decades. Replaced it with a hydraulic hose. added fluid and went to start the engine. HAH! No way, I have a dead short in the wiring now! Must have disturbed something somewhere. I knew the key switch was getting funky, that might be a start there. The short is a good soild one that will let the smoke out of the battery wires if i was to leave it connected. Sheesh! You can't just fix one thing without fixing 5 others!

I’ve felt your pain. Hope you figure it out, and it’s not too expensive to fix.

Thanks, just waiting on the weather to co-operate a little. Found some cooked wires to the starter so I'm going to start there. I'm also going to check the points and see if they got toasted. Gonna get a new ignition switch too! I found a lot of cut off wiring for the lights and for one sensor on the trans I think. More work to do!

Oh boy. Had to pull most of the wiring harness ahead of the firewall (for lack of a better term) to get up into the harness enough to unglue the crispy wires. Got it pretty well figured out, but what I have doesn't match the factory wiring diagram, big surprise! Still suspicious of the ignition switch. Anyone ever pull one apart and clean it up? I've done that on other makes.

Re: It's always something!
Bret, I bought a non running 420. I started by working on “issues” for a long time, patching things until another problem presented itself. Gradually, as money was available, I replaced or rebuilt all the electrics. The wiring harness was one of my first replacements. Lavoy sells them. They come tagged, soldered, and shrink wrapped with a diagram. Having a good harness allowed me to identify and isolate other electrical issues more easily when they arose. Gremlins love old wiring. Good luck.
As for the switch, it’s been a while, but I think I opened mine, scraped the contacts and coated with some dielectric grease, then re assembled. Somewhere along the line I replaced it since it seemed to become unreliable. A 50+ year old part gets tired.

i too have a few parts that seem to be getting unreliable after 77 years also.
But at least can still keep going and doing what needs, might take a bit longer, just like our machines, but gets er done!

Re: It's always something!
Hi,
My switch got just plain worn out in the I position. Became intermittent. So, I bypassed it.
As did the one on the crawler!
I just didn't want to mess with the old wiring with the brittle insulation. It used to have an hour meter but it smoked back in the 70s. Dad made a cover plate and I drilled a hole in the center and put in a toggle switch. I ran new wires from battery and to the coil.

Re: It's always something!
I got the wiring straightened out. The switch is still wonky and finding the neutral "Off" position is a matter of luck as much as anything. Tried to get her started and couldn't keep it running. Got thinking and looking and some clown that took the carb off to access the starter seems to have mislaid the carb to intake gasket! Duh! It's a wonder I can remember to put pants on somedays...

Re: It's always something!
I stand corrected, the gasket IS there. Drained a bunch of water out of the fuel tank though.

That's why I try to keep my fuel tank full. Eliminate the condensate when wet weather and temperature swings hit in fall and winter.
Re: It's always something!
A good idea, but this one had been sitting for about 4 years. Started right up after adding gas. Now it's spitting and sputtering. Need to drain the carb bowl and maybe clean the carb, lotsa crap in the tank I think.

Re: It's always something!
Drain the carb bowl is the first thing that i do on all these schlabel carbs!! with the dirty gas tanks i also put a drop tube with gate valve on it...like used on gas lines to catch water etc....clean tank as best can first
seems tanks are always dropping rust particles and what not into carb and this at least eliminates a lot of the crap...just have to clean the drop tube every so often...

Hi,
Don't forget there is a strainer screen part of the carb fuel line inlet.

Re: It's always something!
Got it! Had to pull the carb and do a thorough cleaning. Runs great now and the hydraulics are back to working now that I stemmed the leaks. Still needs an oil change, leaky valve cover gasket fixed, all the belly pan bolt holes chased out and I really need a seat cushion set. Also got a line a fairly local guy with maybe a decent or at least much better set of tracks. Hope I can the work done I need before hard winter sets in.

Re: It's always something!
Got the hoses fixed, found a return line with a broken clamp and got that too. Both boys were home and I got them to help get the skid pans on. Got it across the town road without incident and made some minor repairs to backhoe. Still needs an oil change and I'll have to pull hood and tank to get at the valve cover gasket. She is a hard starter for a gas job with a fresh rebuild. Pretty sure that's the carb.
While we were under it I found the rock guards are really bent up on the inside. I may pull and straighten them, it would help with the snaky tracks. I'm sure they are way past 100% worn. Flanges on some rollers appear really worn too. That's what you get when you pay junk price for a CLB that comes in numerous boxes!
