Injection pump timing

Post by nrowles » Thu Jun 20, 2024 6:34 pm

I'm pulling the injection pump for rebuild. I got the governor ring timing mark close to the cam mark. Looked down the flywheel hole and could see an indentation in the flywheel. Slowly rotated until the smooth end of the bolt snugged into the indentation. 2 questions.

When reading the manual it says it goes in a hole, a hole to me would mean it goes completely through the flywheel. Confirm the hole it is referencing for the bolt to go into is actually an indentation and not a hole the entire way through?

For the bolt to snug into the indentation, the governor ring mark went about 1/32" past the cam timing mark. Noticeable, but hardly. Is this an issue, and if so, how do I remedy it?

There will be a hole in the flywheel. Not through the flywheel, but it is deep enough that only about 3/8” of the special bolt will be sticking out of the flywheel case.

The key to this whole timing thing is to have #1 cylinder on TDC. So both rockers will be loose because of valve lash. The two marks in the injection pump will be very closely lined up and the special bolt will slip into the flywheel. It may be a little extra work to get the valve cover off, but it will help confirm #1 TDC easier.

So turn the flywheel over, or bar the engine over, and watch the rockers. Exhaust closes, cylinder starts to move down the bore, intake opens, keep turning/barring. Cylinder starts to come up, intake closes. Start looking for the marks to line up, start looking for the flywheel hole. Keep turning until both rockers are loose(valve lash) and the two mark line up. Hole on flywheel should be in line to put the special bolt in place.

Over simplified, but hope this helps. Bruce

Ok I should be good then. Bolt is in the flywheel hole and governor ring mark is only about 1/32 past the cam mark.
