Help to identify 1010 crawler

Post by reedgmi » Thu Jan 02, 2025 12:28 pm

Just bought myself a 1010 gas crawler/dozer, but I'm having trouble identifying it. I understood the s/n should be on the bellhousing somewhere? Can't see anything. The engine is green, so I assume not original - but can't see any s/n on it either. What I can say is:
- gear shift on the floor, not dash
- Has shuttle trans/reverser
- hydraulic controls in box to the right side, not on dash.

I think that makes it at least a 31000, but not sure. And there is a different OM for 42000+ ?

Planning to buy the manuals from Jensales, but want to make sure I get the right ones. Can someone tell me exactly where to look for the s/n, or any other tell tale signs for the year?

Thanks.

Welcome to the boards.

Before you buy manuals from Jensales you might want to give Lavoy a call and discuss your crawler with him. He should have a shot at filling your needs, he provides this site for our use. His business is repairing and selling parts for these older JD crawlers so he has a good background in them, can provide technical advice, and stands by the products he sells. He will be able to help you identify your crawler, and he may have or be able to get the manuals you need through his store. 701-361-1006 during CST business hours.

I was not impressed with the quality of the couple reprints from Jensales I saw, or reviews from others who got reprints from them.

Ah, pity - I already figured out that Lavoy was THE source for parts, but didn't realize he also sold manuals. I'm sure I'll make up for it with future purchases!

With a bit more research, I think I've narrowed it down to be in the 31000 to 42000 range, based on the reverser filter housing and some other things. Would be great to confirm by finding the real, exact s/n though! It has had a coat of paint somewhere in its lifetime, so that's probably covering over something.

Left side bell housing. If it’s not there look for the rivet holes.

100% sure I don't have a tag like that. Took dark & cold to check for rivet holes now, but that would only confirm my previous statement.
Didn't Deere stamp the number anywhere (like Ford)?

Early crawlers the tag is on the RH front side of the engine block.
No, not stamped any place else.

Looks like I'm out of luck then - no tags anywhere.
Anyway, my engine is not original. It's green, for starters. It also has spin-on oil filter, which I understand is on newer engines? From everything else, I placed it in 30,000+ range.

Some pictures of your crawler and engine might reveal something. I think there was a kit to convert the cartridge oil filter engines to spin-on, so the spin-on filter alone isn't a sure thing on it being a later engine.

To post pictures you need contact Lavoy to set up an account on the dedicated picture server or use a third-party picture hosting site. There is info a few threads down on the Messageboard Q&A here. Post Image and Imgur are a couple third party sites you can use for free.

Thanks! Too cold to do much of anything right now, it hasn't moved since unloading from the trailer on Thursday. My work plan so far is:
1. Change all oil & filters
2. Grease everything that needs grease
3. Check/adjust track tension
4. Perhaps replace plugs, ignition side tune up (although runs and starts well as-is)
5. Adjust steering clutches / brakes (if I don't risk making anything worse .... need to check the manual for this)
6. Maybe pull the radiator for a recore. The previous owner said it leaks a little, but no sign of that yet
7. Straighten one of the sliding dozer blade bars
8. New seat cushions

Open to advice for any other "must do" checks or first chores. I did purchase the service/parts manuals, and found some nice original owner's manuals on EBay (crawler & blade)

Hello
I have a 1010 crawler loader and it also has a green engine. The guy I bought it from said it had a hole in the block when he bought so he swapped it
Out with a 1010 engine that he had off from a stationary irrigation pump. It runs fine. Mine has the same features you listed and I narrowed it down to between 24694 to 31000 which I think would make it a 1962. I have not found any tags on it other than the one for the loader

Interesting. Perhaps it just comes with the territory of 60 year old machines using motors common in other applications.
