2-53 engine at a tractor pull

Post by pop pop » Sun Aug 02, 2026 4:54 am

remembering when i saw a 2-53 Detroit in tractor pull at the Arizona state fair around about 1999 , it was in a 420 ?? wide front.
The man had won in his class and upon speaking to him , found out he had it tuned to produce 63 HP,
The event was held inside one of the metal livestock barns, all the other engines seemed quiet compared to the screamin jimmy,
I can describe it as , a 55 gallon drum being hammered at the rate of several thousand rpm. The actual exhaust noise was echoing off the tin roof and looked like a large roman candle. As near as i can guess, he was spinning those fully lugged ag tires at a rate ~75mph.
it was the JD from hell.

The John Deere 435, diesel version of the gas 430, was the ag tractor that had the 2-53 as the OEM engine. The 440ID was the industrial version of the 435 with the 2-53.

Hi,

The 435 was intended to use the extra power out the PTO shaft. They tended to wear out the ring and pinion gears when that power was used for pulling. That was the same back half as the 420w and 430w. IIRC the 440IC sported heavier gears than the 435 did.

I spent a lot of time on a 435 with a 1000 RPM PTO running a three-string small square baler when I was a teenager. The sound was like an industrial vacuum cleaner. ;) But that rig baled as fast as a 4010 could and was a lot more maneuverable.
